Do We Really Need Another Version of the Macarena?

Published by chitownchica under Uncategorized Edit This

That’s right.

Another version of the Macarena.

Apparently, the original version of the Macarena that we all know too well, turned 15.  So to celebrate the quince of sorts, Los del Rio has put together a new snappier version.

Honestly, the two sound pretty much the same, which is pretty disappointing considering how much the original version grates on my nerves.  They could’ve at elast used a new sound, added some fresh lyrics or introduce another singer.

Instead they decided to go the route of keep it the same but give it some more pep– as if the Macarena needs to be peppier.  So, be prepared for an even jazzier version of the dreaded song, something new to listen to for the next fifteen years at every wedding, anniversary and birthday party you go to.

Sorry, I won’t be dancing…and trying my hardest not to listen to it again.

If you want to hear it for yourself though, you can listen to it exclusively on People en Espanol for the time being.  No word yet on when the single will be released to every DJ in the country

Alejandra Guzman Writes to Heal

Published by chitownchica under latin music Edit This

After all the drama that has consumed Guzman and family, the fighting, drug rehab, and overdosing, besos and hugs are being given out all around.  Well, apparently, hugs have been going around since Friday according to People en Espanol.

Now I hear Alejandra did what she does best and penned a song for her daughter Frida.  I am a firm believer that songs are one of the easiest way into a person’s heart, and they are also a great indicator of someone’s sympathy so I hope the song works.

Still, it is going to be a long road to forgiveness and trial and error for this family.  For a mother to be in drug rehab and her daughter in the hospital for an overdose at the same time and then require a call to patch things up and apologize, there has to be a lot of history there.  I understand patchy relationships between mothers and daughters, but I can’t even imagine what this one must be like.

Drama!

Anyway, I really wish the best to this singer and her family.  And while I don’t have the song Alejandra penned for her daughter to share with you, I did want to post a classic Alejandra song today.

Alejandro Sanz’s song, La Primera Persona Allegedly Plagiarized

Published by chitownchica under latin music Edit This

Alejandro Sanz has been singing beautiful ballads to fans of Latin music for years, and recently one of those songs has been allegedly plagiarized.  The song La Primera Persona is being rumored to have been allegedly plagiarized by famous Italian pop star Jovanotti.  Jovanptto’s ballad is titled A Te, and has become a hit both because of the similar lyrics and tune.

Listening to both songs, the melody and harmony of the two songs are very similar.  The lyrics are not all that far off either so I can see where the accusations that the song was plagiarized come from.  Sanz’s song was released before Jovanotti’s though, in 2007, so he clearly has the upperhand if the accusations go any further.

Jovanotti has stated to the press that he never heard the song by Alejandro Sanz before and only listened to it now that the rumors are flying.  Claiming that the sound of the song is one that has been used in the past and many songs can be found to have the same tune, Jovanotti has brushed off any claims of plagiary.

Admittedly, after listening to both songs all the way through, even though the tunes and the lyrics have some similarities, they are both two very different songs and each one does have a sound of its own.  While I think they are very similar, I get Jovanotti’s point and prefer to think that the two songs were created independently of each other.

Here is a video of Alejandro Sanz’s beautiful La Primera Persona

Jenni Rivera Fights Back

Published by chitownchica under latin music Edit This

Apparently Jenni Rivera is just as fed up as every other performer when it comes to fans throwing crap onto the stage.  A can of beer was thrown at Rivera while she was on stage singing.  Rivera was hit in the leg, and after a fan identified himself as the thrower Rivera told her security to bring him onstage so that she can hit him.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I don’t think fans should be throwing things onstage and lately the incidents have gotten out of hand.  But, Rivera has security to take care of problems like this and not only was it wrong of her to hit the fan back, but she didn’t need to stoop to his level.

Any guy that throws things or hits a woman is dirt, and this fan is no exception.  Jenni, a huge latin music singer, ended up whacking her fan with the microphone and split his eyebrow so it was more than a smack.

The incident ended with Rivera being arrested after paramedics were summoned to see to the fan’s injuries.  I guess we will have to wait and see how this lawsuit pans out since the fan now says he only identified himself becuase he thought he won a prize.  Too funny!

In the meantime, here is the music video for the only Rivera song I Can tolerate, de Contrabando.

Enrique Iglesias to Perform at Euro 2008

Published by chitownchica under latin music Edit This

Enrique Iglesias will be performing a new song of his, Can You Hear Me, at this years Euro Soccer Tournament.  As one of the biggest European soccer tournaments, being asked to perform is a big honor for Enrique and I am happy he was asked.

The song, Can You Hear Me, will be performed in English and it will be included in a special edition of his album Insomniac, which was released earlier this year.

As someone who has followed Enrique’s music for several years, I like the song and it is true to his new sound which I think has widespread appeal.  In fact, more people than ever before are listening to Iglesias’ music now that he has fully crossed over and recorded several of his latest songs on his last album in English.

To hear a recording of the song, which does not go on sale until today, visit People.com

And then let me know what you think of it, thumbs up or thumbs down?

Cristian Castro Rumors Still Circling

Published by chitownchica under latin music Edit This

Cristian Castro just can’t keep himself out of the news, and that is probably a good thing for him at least.  In the last few weeks there have been several rumors about the chance that Castro is gay and still in the closet.

There is no proof, no one has stepped up and claimed to be in a relationship with him, but still the rumors keep coming and they keep getting more and more air time.

Just this weekend Castro was approcahed and questioned about the rumors again, he doesn’t really deny them, but he does hint at them being false.

Who knows, maybe he is.  Does it really matter?  His music is incredible and it is why most of his fans continue to listen to him.  Even so, it is possible that his music career would take a hit if he were to come out, Latin America isn’t as open as an all American audience would be.

Anyway, here is another Cristian Castro favorite of mine, Flying Without Wings featuring Westlife.

Singer Noelia’s Sex Tape Case Thrown Out

Published by chitownchica under latin music Edit This

Ahhhh, another dive into the world of sex tapes. This time Puerto Rican singer Noelia is the center of attention.  After the release of her sex tape, Noelia and her manager accused Noelia’s step-father, Topy Mamery, of leaking the tape.

Of course, Mamery denied the accusations and then turned around and sued Noelia and her manager for defamation.  What drama!

A judge cut right through all the crap and decided to throw out the case since neither party had any concrete evidence and who wants to get in between family drama like this anyway.

I don’t have a clip of the infamous sex tape for you, sorry.  But, I can leave you with her music video for Tu.  Enjoy!

Paulina Rubio’s Paparazzi Lawsuit Continues

Published by chitownchica under Uncategorized Edit This

I bet you Paulina Rubio was hoping that the lawsuit brought against her by a certain member of the media would go away.  Well it hasn’t.

In a heated moment between Paulina and a photographer that led to the singer being shoved around and hurt, Paulino attempted to defend herself by using her purse as a weapon.  First of all this incident took place in an airport, so why so many cameramen were allowed to follow her and chase her down for that one photo is an issue.  Secondly, if  a women feels threatened enough to the point where she starts swinging around her purse in defense, you know the situation must have been pretty intense.

Now that the photographer has filed a lawsuit and asked for $500,000 Paulina and her lawyers are speaking out much more than they did when the incident first occured.  If I were here, I wouldn’t agree to pay the amount either, and I’m hoping a judge would feel the same way after learning about the behavior of the photographer.  If they are willing to go to such extreme lengths to get those shots, then they should be willing and ready to deal with the consequences.

We will have to wait and see how the trail pays off, till then there is my favorite Rubio song, Enamorada

Turns Out Oscar de la Hoya Doesn’t Like Fishnet

Published by chitownchica under latin music Edit This

Turns out that boxer turned crooner, Oscar de la Hoya, doesn’t like fishnet stockings after all.  The lawsuit against Oscar was dropped today regarding the photos that were plastered all over the internet late last year.

The pics were posted by Milana Dravnel, and de la Hoya claimed that they were fake the entire time.  After de la Hoya publicly called Dravnel a liar, she sued him.

Recently the pictures of Oscar dressed up in fishnet stockings were analyzed and it was determined that they were fakes and digitally altered.  Dravnel dropped her suit against de la Hoya, but further drama surrounding the case might not be over yet.

After all, de la Hoya’s fake portraits were plastered on the internet and mainstream magazines everywhere.

Till the next bit of drama…..
